| The
Accelerated Reading Program is a nationally recognized program developed
by Renaissance Learning. It measures a student's reading
practices and provides daily, ongoing feedback. Graford
Elementary students in grades 2 - 6 begin by taking a STAR test three
times a year to determine their reading levels. Teachers then assign
a specific number of points each six weeks based on these test results. To achieve set goals, students begin reading approximately 35 minutes a day and advance to 1 hour daily by mid-term. They take an AR test on the computer after completing each book. The computer maintains a record of all books read along with each individual's AR test scores. This information is available to teachers. When goals are achieved, the child is rewarded with an AR party each six weeks in addition to points that can be redeemed at an AR Carnival during end-of-year activities. Graford has successfully used this program for 16 years, as demonstrated by student improvement in TAAS/TAKS scores, gains in the STAR tests, and by a visible increase in the number of students who are now reading outside of the classroom.
