New Texas Law Prohibits Cell Phones in School for Students

Graford ISD will be updating our cell phone policy to align with the new state law, House Bill 1481. This law, which goes into effect this school year, is designed to reduce distractions and support student learning.

What’s Changing?

For Students in Pre-K through 5th Grade:

  • Students will not be allowed to bring personal communication devices to school.

  • This includes:

    • Cell phones

    • Smartwatches

    • Tablets

    • Laptops

    • Earbuds/airpods

    • Any other device used for personal communication

For Students in Grades 6–12:

  • Students will be issued a Yondr pouch, where they will be required to lock up their personal devices (such as cell phones and smartwatches) at the beginning of each school day.

  • Devices will remain secured until the end of the school day.

Please see the attached video for a full explanation of how the Yondr pouch system works.

Exceptions:

If your child has a documented medical or educational need that requires access to a device (included in their IEP or 504 plan), please contact your campus principal to discuss possible exceptions.
